Facts About Phaneroptera falcata
Phaneroptera falcata, commonly known as the sickle-bearing bush-cricket, is a herbivorous insect that belongs to the Tettigoniidae family, specifically the Phaneropterinae subfamily. These bush-crickets typically measure between 24 to 36 mm in length and are generally found in warm scrublands, grasslands, dry shrub areas, sandpits, and even gardens.
Phaneroptera falcata is primarily encountered in central and southern Europe, with their northernmost range extending to the vicinity of Cologne. They are notably absent from the Alpine foothills and large parts of the Swabian Alps. Interestingly, their habitat range has been expanding towards northern Europe in recent years. Occasionally, an adult may be observed in Britain, and in 2015, a small colony was discovered near Dungeness in Kent.
