St. John's Church, Ambert
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Jean church is a Catholic church located in Ambert, in Auvergne. Replacing a previous Romanesque building, itself succeeding a Carolingian church, it was built at the end of the Middle Ages in the flamboyant Gothic style and is characterized by its Renaissance bell tower. It is built in granite, a local material.
Main religious building of the Ambert valley, it is the center of the spiritual life of the Livradois since the Middle Ages. Placed under the vocation of John the Baptist, it has thus taken over the dedication of the old baptistry, the parish being dedicated to Como and Damien in the Middle Ages, then to Jean-François Régis in the modern era.
Since 1909, the church is classified as a historical monument. In 2013 and 2015, structural disorders lead to falling stones, the closure of part of the building to the public and the cessation of the ringing of the bells. Restorations are carried out, notably with the support of the Fondation du patrimoine.
