The city hall of Dunkerque is a hundred years old building. Damaged during the two world wars, it was restored each time. In 2005, the belfry of the city hall is admitted to the UNESCO World Heritage among the belfries of Belgium and France. The city of Dunkirk has two of them, the second being the belfry of the church of Saint-Eloi, a hundred meters from the city hall. The town hall is the administrative center of the city, as in most cities, are held there council, marriage, civil status, etc. but it is also one of the places impossible to circumvent of the band of Dunkirk during the carnival. The Jean-Bart gate, the belfry of the town hall as well as its facade and roofs are registered as historical monuments.
