Maison Max Ernst, Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche
Facts and practical information
The house of Max Ernst is a house located in Saint-Martin-d'Ardèche, France. The house was bought in 1937 by Leonora Carrington. She lived there with the painter Max Ernst from 1938 to the declaration of war, September 3, 1939, when Max Ernst was arrested because of his German nationality and interned as an "enemy alien" first in the prison of Largentière, then in the Camp des Milles. He was released on December 23, 1939, following the intervention of his friend Paul Eluard with the President of the Republic, Albert Lebrun. In May 1940, Max Ernst was again arrested and transferred to Les Milles. After his arrest, Leonora Carrington remained alone in Saint-Martin d'Ardèche. In June 1940, the notary Albert Joseph Aimé Pagès wrote a certificate authorizing Berthe Granier, owner of the Hotel des Touristes in Saint-Martin d'Ardèche, to sell the house on behalf of Leonora Carrington, who then left France for Spain.
