Chartreuse de Valbonne, Saint-Paulet-de-Caisson
Facts and practical information
The Carthusian monastery of Valbonne is a former monastery of the Carthusian order, in the commune of Saint-Paulet-de-Caisson, in the Gard department and the Occitanie region.
All the buildings occupy a large area. Founded in the 13th century, it is located in a valley in the heart of the rich state forest of Valbonne, home to rare species in the Mediterranean region. It has a conventual church, a large cloister and a small cloister and many chapels. Several of its towers as well as the roof of the conventual church and its bell tower are covered with glazed tiles in the Burgundian style, giving the ensemble a most picturesque appearance for a Provencal charterhouse. The vaults of the church with their complex stereotomy are the work of the Franque brothers from Avignon, specialists in the field.
The Charterhouse was classified as a historical monument in 1959 and 1974.
