Musée des beaux-arts de Bernay, Bernay
Facts and practical information
The Bernay Museum of Fine Arts was created in the second half of the 19th century, a period when a considerable number of museums were being created throughout France. Labelled as a museum of France in 2002, it is one of the oldest museums in the Eure department.
Housed in the former abbey residence, the collections, spread over two levels, have been enriched over time through numerous donations, bequests, deposits and acquisitions and today consist of nearly 10,000 objects. They reflect the collections of provincial museums conceived in the 19th century: encyclopedic and didactic, combining fine arts, antiquities, science, archaeology, decorative arts and natural history.
The museum is proud to possess one of the most beautiful sets of Rouen earthenware in Normandy and to offer its visitors the possibility of seeing works attributed to renowned artists such as Carlo Cignani, Charles Le Brun, Nicolas de Largillierre, Adriaen Coorte, Jan van Goyen, Louis Valtat, André Mare, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Henri de Maistre.
Since 2012, a room is specially dedicated to the history of Bernay, labeled City of Art and History. Temporary exhibitions are regularly organized, as well as animations: guided tours, workshops for young people, conferences.
