Arc de Triomphe, Paris

The Arc de Triomphe stands majestically at the western end of the Champs-Élysées in Paris, France, and is one of the most iconic monuments in the city. This grand arch was commissioned by Napoleon in 1806 after his victory at Austerlitz, but it was not completed until 1836, long after his downfall. The structure is a symbol of French national pride and honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars.

With its imposing size of 50 meters in height, 45 meters in width, and 22 meters in depth, the Arc de Triomphe is the second-largest triumphal arch in existence. The monument's façades feature intricate sculptures and reliefs depicting victorious battles and engraved names of generals and wars. The most famous relief is François Rude's "La Marseillaise," which represents the French people rising up against their oppressors.

Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I, with its eternal flame that is rekindled every evening at 6:30 pm. This solemn site is a powerful reminder of the cost of war and a tribute to the unidentified soldiers who gave their lives for their country.

Visitors can climb 284 steps to reach the top of the Arc de Triomphe, where they are rewarded with panoramic views of the Parisian skyline. The terrace provides a unique perspective of the city, overlooking the dozen avenues that radiate from the arch, including the famous Champs-Élysées.

The Arc de Triomphe is a site of national commemorative events, most notably the annual Bastille Day military parade on July 14th. It also serves as the focal point for the victory celebrations of various sporting events, such as the final stage of the Tour de France cycling race.
