Chapelle des Pénitents Noirs, Avignon
Facts and practical information
The chapel of the Pénitents noirs is located in Avignon in the rue de la Banasterie. It hosted one of the major brotherhoods of the papal city. The "Grey Penitents" were the first of a long series of penitents in Avignon. The "Black Penitents" were founded in 1488 by a group of Florentine nobles, the "White Penitents" were founded in 1527 by thirteen people from Avignon, and the "Blue Penitents" were formed in 1557 as a result of a dissent from the other brotherhoods. Then, at the end of the 16th century, the "Pénitents noirs de la Miséricorde" were born. The movement continued with the foundation of the "Pénitents violets", then the "Pénitents rouges". The Revolution put an end to this proliferation and only the "Grey Penitents" and the "Black Penitents" remain in Avignon today.
