St. Michael's Church, Juziers
Facts and practical information
Saint-Michel Church is a Catholic parish church, located in Juziers, Yvelines, France.
Its origins date back to the 10th century. It was placed under the patronage of the Saint-Père-en-Vallée de Chartres abbey under the Ancien Régime, which maintained a priory to the north of the church from the 11th to the end of the 17th century. In its present form, the church consists of a very austere basilica nave from the middle of the 11th century, a contemporary transept, and a choir from the third quarter of the 12th century. The oldest parts are of great archaeological value, as very few buildings of this magnitude from this period remain in Île-de-France. However, their interest is diminished by the reconstruction of the western façade, the vaulting of the arches and the reduction of the arcade towards the southern crossing during the 1850s, and the collapse of the central bell tower in 1753, causing major damage to the transept.
The choir is equally valuable for its original architecture, not without elegance, and as a witness to the beginnings of Gothic architecture. It has not been altered since its construction.
The church of Saint-Michel was classified as a historical monument very early on by a classification notice of August 1, 1850, and underwent a complete restoration during the following period. Juziers is now affiliated with the pastoral sector of the Right Bank of the Seine with headquarters in Meulan, and Saint-Michel church hosts early Sunday masses every other Saturday at 6:30 pm.
