The castle of Surgères is located on the right bank of the Gères in Surgères in Charente-Maritime and is the historical, cultural and tourist heart of the city.
This vast castral complex, originally built in the Middle Ages, at the end of the Carolingian period, includes today a somewhat disparate group of buildings dating from the 11th century for the church and from the 16th to the 18th century for the civil buildings, enclosed behind a belt of ramparts and towers dating from the medieval period.
