The Paleosite is a museographic space and an interpretation center of the Prehistory located in the commune of Saint-Césaire, 10 km east of Saintes and 15 km west of Cognac, in Charente-Maritime, and is near the archaeological site of the Roche à Pierrot, where a Neanderthal skeleton was discovered in 1979, named "Pierrette".
Property of the Department of Charente-Maritime, the Paleosite was designed under the aegis of the world's greatest Neanderthal specialists and under the scientific direction of professors Yves Coppens and Bernard Vandermeersch.
It is one of the most visited tourist and cultural sites in Charente-Maritime, being listed among the 17 must-see sites of the department.
