Église Saint-Séverin, Oinville-sur-Montcient
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Séverin church is a Catholic parish church located in Oinville-sur-Montcient, Yvelines, France. It was founded in 1127, but only the north wall of the nave remains from that time. The building is articulated around a transept of the first Gothic period, whose transept crossing serves as a base for the central bell tower, and surprises by the cohabitation between double arches of Romanesque invoice, and capitals of hooks already quite evolved, which are not prior to the end of the 12th century. To the east of the transept, the choir consists of a square bay from the same period, but largely reworked, and a polygonal apse from the Renaissance, which is remarkable only for the baroque stone altarpiece it contains, and its decoration on the outside. Unequal side chapels occupy the corners between the transept's crosspieces and the choir. The northern one should date from the 13th century, and has a somewhat rusticated Gothic architecture, and the northern one displays the style of the late flamboyant period, shortly before the middle of the 16th century, and is marked by a lierne and tierceron vault decorated with four hanging keys. To the west of the transept, there is a double nave of three bays in length, in line with the square of the transept and the south cross. Vaulted at the same height, the nave and its side aisle are in the flamboyant style, and quite representative of the post-Hundred Years War reconstruction in the French Vexin. On the outside, the apse, and even more so, the elegant little Gothic bell tower, are the most emblematic elements of the church. It was classified as a historical monument by decree on January 8, 1932. It is affiliated to the parish of "Limay-Vexin", which includes sixteen communes and eighteen places of worship. Sunday masses are celebrated there about every two months, at 10:30 am.
