Facts and practical information

Saint-Pierre Church is a Catholic parish church located in Jaux, in the Oise department in France.

The building is composed of two very heterogeneous parts, namely a short nave of two bays accompanied by two aisles, and a vast flamboyant Gothic choir-hall of three times three bays, with a flat chevet. The mutilated Romanesque bell tower from the first half of the 12th century rises above the first bay of the choir's central nave, which corresponds to the former transept crossing. The western façade and the walls of the south aisle are probably also Romanesque. Inside, however, the nave is flamboyant. Its vaults were never built, and it must be considered unfinished. The near absence of side windows is striking. It is the eastern parts of the church that make it interesting. They were almost entirely rebuilt at the beginning of the 16th century, except for the bell tower, whose piers were rebuilt underneath. The three vessels are homogeneous and vaulted at the same height. They are distinguished by their very pure flamboyant architecture, which does not exclude a certain diversity of pillar shapes. The large windows of the last bay have elegant infill, but the three bays of the chevet are unfortunately blocked. The side windows preserve fragments of stained glass from 1541, the most interesting of which have been heavily restored. Among the church's furnishings, the rood beam, slightly later than its construction, is the most remarkable element, but it is also worth mentioning the altarpieces coming from the Carmelite monastery of Compiègne. They represent memories of the sixteen blessed Carmelites of Compiègne, martyred in July 1794, and patronesses of the parish of Compiègne to which Jaux is affiliated. The church was classified as a historical monument by order of April 7, 1921.
