Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial

Nestled in the serene landscape of Belleau, France, the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial stands as a solemn tribute to the valor and sacrifice of American soldiers who fought in World War I. This hallowed ground, spread across 42 acres, is the final resting place for 2,288 American military dead, most of whom lost their lives in the Battle of Belleau Wood and the immediate area.

The cemetery, dedicated on May 30, 1937, is meticulously maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission. It is located at the foot of the hill where the Battle of Belleau Wood was fiercely fought in June 1918, a pivotal engagement for American forces on the Western Front. Visitors to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery are greeted by a majestic memorial chapel, constructed of beautiful Euville limestone, which bears the names of 1,060 soldiers who went missing in action and whose remains were never recovered or identified. The chapel's interior is adorned with a sculpted and stained-glass tribute to the American forces, while the exterior is inscribed with a dedication to the heroism of those who fought in the surrounding region.

The meticulously landscaped grounds, bordered by woods and dotted with rows of white marble headstones, create a peaceful and reflective environment. Each headstone marks a grave with the name, rank, state, and date of death of the soldier, serving as a poignant reminder of the individual lives given in the pursuit of liberty.
