Église Saint-jean-Baptiste de Valence, Valence, Drôme
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste church is a Catholic church located on the Saint-Jean square, in the old town of Valence, in the Drôme department.
It is perched at the highest point of the city, a sign of its antiquity, and would be one of the very first places of Christian worship in a then nascent Valencia. Documents mention the holding of various councils in it, notably those of 374 and 855. The church was actually mentioned for the first time in the inventory of the chapter of Valence, in 1189. However, everything leads us to believe that the building was built much earlier, without however being able to attest to this by means of dates. It is traditionally assumed that it was built during the High Middle Ages.
The church of St. John the Baptist has been registered as a historical monument since August 4, 1978.
