Porte d'Arroux, Autun
Facts and practical information
The Arroux gate or Sens gate is one of the entrance gates of Augustodunum in the French department of Saône-et-Loire.
Built during the reign of Augustus, like the rest of the city walls, it commands the passage north to Auxerre. The gate had a defensive function, but its configuration also allowed for the raising of duties on goods passing through it thanks to the construction of an airlock. It was also conceived as a monumental work testifying to the prestige of the city.
Its first floor and first floor are partially preserved; these remains were classified as historical monuments in 1836.
