Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge
Facts and practical information
The Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge stands as an emblematic structure in the Charente-Maritime department of France, gracefully spanning the Charente River. Completed in 1900, this engineering marvel is one of the few remaining transporter bridges in the world, a testament to the ingenuity of the Industrial Revolution.
This metallic giant, with a height of 50 meters and a length of 175 meters, was designed to facilitate the movement of people and goods across the river while allowing ships to pass unhindered. Its most distinctive feature is the suspended gondola, or ferry platform, which travels back and forth between the two towers, carrying vehicles and passengers in a short, scenic journey.
The Rochefort-Martrou Transporter Bridge not only serves a practical purpose but also stands as a cultural and historical monument. It was declared a French national historic site in 1976, ensuring its preservation for future generations to admire. Visitors can experience a unique ride on the gondola, offering a picturesque view of the river and the surrounding landscape, or walk alongside the bridge for an equally impressive perspective.
