St. Peter's Church, Verberie
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Pierre church is a Catholic parish church located in Verberie, France. It is one of a small group of churches classified as historical monuments in the Oise department by lists of 1840 and 1862, numbering less than thirty buildings. The reputation of this rural church is largely attributable to an oral tradition, according to which the southern crosspiece of the transept was the former chapel of Charlemagne's royal palace. Although it was only built at the end of the 12th century, it is nevertheless an interesting example of early Gothic architecture. For its other parts which are Gothic, and especially flamboyant, the church of Saint-Pierre is quite characteristic of a small church of the Valois of the XV th century, because it was rebuilt in large part after its bombardment by the English in 1430.
