Église Saint-Maximin, Saint-Maximin
Facts and practical information
The Saint-Maximin church is a Catholic parish church located in Saint-Maximin, France. It is a very complex building, which was built in several stages, and underwent some remodeling. Its oldest parts date back to the last quarter of the 11th century. These are the western portal of the nave, with its rudimentary decoration, and the two-story bell tower, which is quite representative of its time. Most of the bays on the second floor have unfortunately disappeared, and those on the second floor were redone in the 15th century. The stone spire was added in the middle of the 12th century. The nave, whose large arches were pierced at the same time, is without character, and the base of the bell tower and the eastern parts have lost some of their authenticity during a restoration in the 19th century. The cross vault under the bell tower is, however, original, as is an archaic carving with broken lines. The most interesting part of the church is the small choir from the 1170s, whose simple capitals still recall the late Romanesque period. The church of Saint-Maximin was registered as a historical monument in 1926. It is affiliated with the parish of Blessed Frederic Ozanam of Creillois-Centre.
