Château de Penne, Penne
Facts and practical information
The castle of Penne is a 12th century fortified castle located in the French commune of Penne in the Tarn department in the Occitanie region. The castle was built during the Merovingian period. Its exceptional location allowed it to play a leading role in the history of Quercy. During the Albigensian crusade, it was the focus of bloody wars between the lord of Penne, who rallied to the Cathar heresy, and the partisans of Simon IV de Montfort. Later, during the Hundred Years' War, the English and the truckers took turns to seize the fortress. Fallen into ruin for 450 years, it is currently being restored.
