Théatre Antique, Alba-la-Romaine
Facts and practical information
The Gallo-Roman theater is a Gallo-Roman theater located in France on the commune of Alba-la-Romaine, in the department of Ardèche in the region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
The theater is one of the elements of the monumental adornment of Alba Helviorum, capital of the civitas of the Helvians in antiquity. It underwent three successive phases of construction and development, towards the end of the 1st century BC, at the beginning of the 1st century and then at the beginning of the 2nd century. These stages are characterized by an enlargement and a monumentalization of the building which seems to be abandoned from the end of the 3rd century.
It has been classified as a historical monument since July 10, 1959, and the classification was completed on July 31, 1986 at the same time as that of the entire archaeological site of Alba-la-Romaine.
