Parc du Reynou
Facts and practical information
The Reynou zoo is a zoological park located in the Haute-Vienne department, in the commune of Le Vigen. The park covers more than 60 hectares and has more than 600 animals of over 130 different species. It opened its doors on July 1, 1997 and presents a wide variety of species ranging from pygmy marmosets, the smallest monkey in the world, to Rothschild's giraffes, as well as many species of wild animals and birds.
It has been designed so that each animal can evolve in its natural environment. The animals are geographically distributed on two African plains, two Asian plains, a South American sector, an Australian sector and a mini-farm.
The park is organized around the Haviland family castle and the atypical rock gardens. The gardens were created by André Laurent, at the end of the 19th century, at the request of Charles-Édouard Haviland. One finds many rare plant species for the region, such as giant sequoias and American oaks.
With 90,000 visitors per year, the park is the leading tourist leisure site in the Limousin.
The three episodes of the series Victor Sauvage with Jean-Luc Reichmann, broadcast in 2010 and 2011 on TF1, were shot there.
In 2013, the park hosted snow leopards, large bharals and Visayan wild boars.
In 2016, Reynou Zoo Park further expanded the number of species presented to the public with the development of a new small farm in the heart of the zoo, featuring the local breed of black-bottomed pig. An island was built on the English River to accommodate red pandas. Many other species have joined the zoo in recent years such as kinkajous, tapirs and onagers.
The lodges open in 2016 and are available year-round.
In 2017, the park celebrated its 20th anniversary.
In 2017, part of the filming of the movie Gaspard va au mariage took place there.
