Château de Mayenne
Facts and practical information
The castle of Mayenne is a former Carolingian residence of the 10th century, built under the reign of Charles the Simple, and reworked several times, which stands on the French town of Mayenne in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region.
Originally a Carolingian palace, it was refurbished several times during the Middle Ages, before becoming a prison in the 18th century. The castle was finally bought by the city of Mayenne in 1936. During important development works carried out in 1993, Carolingian vestiges were brought to light. This discovery of preserved Carolingian civil or military buildings is extremely rare. The site was declared an archaeological site of national interest, and major excavations were carried out before the castle became a museum.
The castle was registered as a historical monument by decree on November 19, 1927.
