Le Môle
Facts and practical information
Le Môle is a prominent mountain located in the Haute-Savoie department of France, rising as a solitary peak that offers breathtaking views of the surrounding French Alps. Standing at an elevation of 1,863 meters, Le Môle is known for its distinctive shape that resembles a reclining woman when viewed from certain angles, leading to the nickname "La Dame Couchée," or "The Reclining Lady."
The mountain is a popular destination for hikers and nature enthusiasts who are drawn to its accessible trails and the promise of panoramic vistas at the summit. The ascent is considered moderately challenging, making it a suitable trek for both experienced hikers and those with a reasonable level of fitness. The trail to the top of Le Môle starts from the village of Saint-Jean-de-Tholome or from the hamlet of Chez Béroud, and it takes approximately two to three hours to reach the summit.
Once at the top, hikers are rewarded with a 360-degree view that encompasses the Mont Blanc massif, the Aravis range, and on clear days, even the Jura mountains and Lake Geneva. The summit also features a large cross, which is a common sight on many peaks in the Alps, serving as a beacon for those approaching the final ascent.
Le Môle is not just a summer destination; during the winter months, the mountain's slopes become a playground for snowshoeing and backcountry skiing, offering a quieter and more secluded experience compared to the bustling nearby ski resorts.
The mountain holds a special place in the cultural and natural heritage of the region. It is not just a site of physical recreation but also a source of inspiration for artists and a haven for wildlife. The lower slopes are dotted with alpine meadows and forests that are home to an array of flora and fauna.
