Château de Gombervaux
Facts and practical information
The castle of Gombervaux is a fourteenth century castle located near Vaucouleurs in the Meuse, in the Grand Est region.
This fortified house, of which only the facade remains, was equipped with four corner towers and a lofty keep-porch with battlements. Part of the castle was used as a stone quarry by the inhabitants of the neighboring villages. The castle is surrounded by a moat filled with water, fed by three springs. The water in the moat is regulated by a valve and the overflow flows into the ditch called "de Gombervaux".
The site of Gombervaux was classified as a Historic Monument by a decree dated March 21, 1994. The creation of the Gombervaux Association, on January 11, 1989, made it possible to save the castle which was then totally abandoned, its moat no longer existed, and the vegetation had invaded the castle. Thanks to the efforts of the association, the castle of Gombervaux was able to be reborn from its ruins, many elements were restored. The association animates the place by organizing cultural and touristic actions, attracting a large public anxious to know better this regional heritage.
