Amphithéâtre romain, Béziers
Facts and practical information
The arena of Béziers is an amphitheater of the Roman colony Colonia Vrbs Julia Septimanorum Baeterrae built in the first century AD, without further precision possible, south of the Roman city of Baeterrae in Gaul narbonnaise, near the ancient theater, on the hill Saint-Jacques.
On a site that had already been occupied by humans a few centuries before its construction, the amphitheater seems to have been abandoned at the end of the 3rd century. In the Middle Ages, it was used as a stone quarry and potters' kilns were installed in its masonry before, until the middle of the 20th century, buildings were erected on its substructions. Cleared and excavated from 1987 to 2005, its ruins are partially developed into a public garden and registered as a historical monument in 2013.
