Hefekranz

Hefekranz and Hefezopf are delightful sweet breads originating from Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and South Tyrol. These delectable treats are crafted from a dough typically consisting of sugar, flour, butter, eggs, and yeast. Occasionally, bakers enhance their flavor by incorporating raisins or almonds.

The primary distinction between Hefezopf and Hefekranz lies in their shape. Hefezopf, which translates to "yeast braid" forms a loaf from three braided strands of dough. Conversely, Hefekranz, or "yeast wreath" takes the same braid and shapes it into a circular wreath.

In Sweden, you’ll encounter similar breads known as vetekrans and vetelängd. The vetekrans, meaning "wheat wreath" is fashioned into a circular shape by joining the ends of the braid before baking. Vetelängd, or "wheat length" resembles the traditional Hefezopf, maintaining its elegant braided loaf form.
