Facts About Toast Hawaii
Toast Hawaii, also known as Hawaiian Toast, is a delightful open-faced sandwich renowned for its simplicity and distinctive taste. The foundation is a slice of toasted bread, layered with ham, cheese, and a pineapple ring adorned with a maraschino cherry in the center. The entire ensemble is broiled until the cheese melts to perfection.
This delectable dish is credited to Clemens Wilmenrod, a notable German television chef, and has become an emblem of West German cuisine from the 1950s. The concept is thought to have originated from a recipe called "Grilled Spamwich" which appeared in a Spam cookbook published by Hormel in 1939. American G.I.s introduced this recipe to West Germany. However, since Spam was not available in German markets, Wilmenrod substituted it with cooked ham, thus giving birth to Toast Hawaii.
