Tower of the Winds, Athens
Facts and practical information
The Tower of the Winds, also known as the Horologion of Andronikos Kyrrhestes, is a fascinating archaeological site situated in the Roman Agora of Athens, Greece. This ancient timepiece, constructed in the 1st century BC, stands as a testament to the ingenuity of classical engineering and architecture.
Made of Pentelic marble, the octagonal structure is approximately 12 meters in height and was originally topped with a weathervane that indicated the wind direction. Each of the tower's eight sides faces a point of the compass and is decorated with a frieze depicting the Anemoi, the Greek personifications of the winds. These reliefs not only served an aesthetic purpose but also had a practical function, helping to identify the wind blowing at any given time.
The interior of the tower was equally impressive, housing a complex water clock, or clepsydra, which was fed by water from the Acropolis. This clock was used to measure time accurately, regardless of the time of day or night, making the Tower of the Winds one of the most advanced horological devices of its time.
Despite its age, the Tower of the Winds has been remarkably well-preserved, allowing visitors to marvel at the precision and skill of ancient Greek craftsmanship. As an archaeological site, it provides a unique glimpse into the technological advancements of the Hellenistic period and the cultural importance of timekeeping in ancient society.
