The castle of Kos, best known as the Castle of Nerantzia, is the most important part of the knightly fortification made by the Ioannite Knights in the late 14th century. At the end of the 14th and early 15th centuries, Kos was densely declined with nodes and lemons for it and was named Nerantzia and the Castle of the Castle of Nerandzia.
The castle consists of two fortified enclosures, the interior is earlier. It has a rectangular shape and in its corners is framed by 4 tall towers. A wide ditch separates the two enclosures and only on the east side are joined by an oblique downhill road.
The castle of Nerantzia, along with the castle of St. Peter on the opposite coast of ancient Bodrum, controlled the sea passage to the Holy Land during the Crusades. Many architectural members from the ancient city of Kos and Asklepieion have been used to build the castle, which are visible to this day built in various parts of the castle.
In the 19th century, the castle of Nerantzia was used as a barracks of the Turkish guard and residence of the Turkish commander. On March 17, 1816, an accident exploded by an accident and destroyed much of the castle.
Its current form is due to the Italian archaeological service which demolished Turkish additions during the Italian occupation and carried out extensive work to restore the castle in its original form.
During the German occupation of the Castle the guard was stratured and served as a prison. He was historically preserved in 1948.
