St. Emeric Church, Székesfehérvár
Facts and practical information
The St. Imre Church of Székesfehérvár is located in the city centre, on the Városház Square. The rich Baroque church was built between 1720 and 1743 by the Franciscans, who had been present in Fehérvár since the 13th century, but left the city during the Turkish occupation, returning after the reconquest of Fehérvár in 1688, and then built an order house next to the church. According to tradition, the site of the church and the monastery was once the site of the royal palace where Prince Imre, son of Stephen I, was born. The relic of the eponym is in the church's foundation stone.
Today, the oldest diocesan museum in Hungary, the Székesfehérvár Diocesan Museum, with its rich collection of church history, is housed in the monastery.
