Telefónia Múzeum, Budapest
Facts and practical information
The Telefónia Museum is a technical exhibition hall located at 30 Országház Street I in Budapest.
The museum presents more than 130 years of Hungarian artifacts related to the telephone in a listed building.
From 1928 to 1985, the Rotary 7A1 automatic telephone exchange of the district was located here. Uniquely, after its closure, the switchboard was not dismantled, but a museum was built around it. Opposite the entrance is the ancient telephone exchange of Tivadar Puskás. The room is tastefully decorated with old telephones and equipment used by the original director, Franz Joseph, Charles IV, Miklós Horthy and János Kádár's chief-secretary. In the next room is the aforementioned telephone exchange, which with a few lines is still in working order and can be tested today. The cabling and overhead wiring can be seen next to the windows. In the third room, alongside the old public telephones, are the more modern push-button telephones and modern switchboard units. This is also where the internet demonstration is located. In the last room you can see temporary exhibitions. In the hallway in the lobby you can see, among other things, the invention of the Hungarian-born American Mihály Pupin, the pupin jar named after him.
