Church of St. George, Sopron
Facts and practical information
The gothic, single-nave interior of the Church of St George in Sopron was remodelled in several stages after the fire of 1676: the nave with its pointed arch was decorated with rich stucco and framed on both sides by a row of chapels.
It was originally built in Gothic style between 1380 and 1430. Its busy Italianate façade dates from the 17th century, but two Gothic reliefs have been preserved. It was also slightly altered in the 1760s. Its eclectic tower was added in 1882.
The baptistery chapel next to the sanctuary contains a medieval fresco fragment. The stucco decorations were made between 1705 and 1706 by Pietro Antonio Conti; the furnishings are mostly 18th century.
The church houses the oldest organ in Hungary, the work of Viennese master Johann Wöckherl from 1633.
Free and open to the public.
