Storno House museum, Sopron
Facts and practical information
The Storno House is a palatial baroque corner house in the centre of Sopron, one of the jewels of the Main Square. In the 15th century, it belonged to the Haberleiter family, who hosted King Matthias during his siege of Vienna in the winter of 1482-83. In the 18th century, it became the property of the Festetics family and was finally restored to its original form.
The family of id. Ferenc Storno, who came from Bavaria, bought the building in 1872, where Ferenc Liszt gave concerts as a guest in 1840 and 1881. The house is characterised by a two-storey, richly decorated, round, closed corner porch, a basket-arched doorway with Tuscan half-pillars and a Pelican knocker with a fine design.
Id. Ferenc Storno made a significant contribution as a painter and restorer. In the course of his work he saved many monuments that were doomed to destruction: these became the basis of his famous collection.
The Storno House was once the home of the Black Elephant Pharmacy, which has been moved to the White Angel Pharmacy Museum.
Ferenc Liszt also lived here.
Today the house is the headquarters of the Sopron Museum with two permanent exhibitions.
