Trianon Múzeum
Facts and practical information
The Trianon Museum is the only institution in the Carpathian Basin that deals with the peace treaty after the First World War and its consequences today. The material on display in the Museum covers the history and consequences of the Trianon Dictate in the context of the Carpathian Basin, the irredentist movements that followed the First World War, the moments of the return of certain parts of the country temporarily reannexed to the motherland, the events of the Second World War and the collective reprisals suffered by Hungarians after the war.
Through its permanent and travelling exhibitions, visitors to the museum can gain a comprehensive understanding of the consequences of the decisions that ended the First World War and the often bloody historical processes that followed. Through its events, scientific and cultural activities, the museum aims to present the legacy of the communities that have lived together in the Carpathian Basin for a thousand years, and to support and patronise initiatives that seek to remedy the physical and spiritual fragmentation of the Hungarian nation. To this end, the Museum has launched a number of national policy initiatives that have so far been missing: it has helped to initiate the rehabilitation of the victims of the Hungarian extermination in the South as well as to initiate the scientific and social discourse on the history of deportations and expulsions in the Highlands. The collection on display in the Museum not only documents the tragic events of the 20th century's loss of land from Novi Sad to Kassa, from Târgu Mureș to Munkács, from Nitra to Varazdin. It sets in motion the collective psychological mechanisms that lead to the coming to terms with the tragedies of 20th century Hungary and the healing of the national wounds. Visits to the Trianon Museum are free of charge for people living in the territories that were separated from Hungary after 1920.
