Halfway between Lake Balaton and Lake Velence, at the foot of the Bakony mountains - in the medieval times a marshy area - lies the town of Várpalota. In its main square stands the castle of Várpalota, also known as Palota Castle or Thury Castle, which has survived many bloody sieges.
