Hungary Travel Weather

March - May

The beginning of the Hungarian spring brings a gradual warming. The average air temperature ranges from 10°C to 18°C, and in May it can already reach above 23°C. The sun shines for 7 hours a day, and there may also be cloudiness and fleeting rains, but they are not very troublesome. The weather allows for comfortable sightseeing, and the greening trees and flowering stretches of fields make hiking more pleasant.

The bathing season at Balaton begins in early May, when the water temperature reaches 20°C - 22°C and heats up very quickly. Thermal pools and hot springs can be enjoyed.

June - August

Hot summer months, the best time to explore Hungary and all kinds of activities and leisure. The temperature oscillates between 25°C and 30°C, and often even exceeds 35°C. A cloudless sky hosts the sun 11-12 hours a day. Occasionally there may be fleeting short rains and thunderstorms.

Sunny days create very good conditions for both sightseeing and hiking in the hills and vineyards. In summer, all the holiday resorts and thermal springs are bustling with activity. The bathing season at Lake Balaton and other lakes is underway. Countless swimming pools and outdoor pools are also open. This is an excellent time for those who enjoy active recreation; you can sail, kayak and windsurf.

September - October

The days are still warm, but no longer as hot as in summer. The weather is quite changeable, once sunny with high temperatures other times a bit cooler with rain and thunderstorms. Autumn is a very good time for people who want to avoid the biggest heat waves. You can go sightseeing and trekking in the mountains in comfort.

The bathing season at Lake Balaton continues in September, with the lake water, heated up in summer, keeping the temperature above 20°C. Also in September, Hungary's wine harvest and many wine-related festivals begin. Local festivals, fairs and tastings are worth attending then. Especially lavishly celebrated around the cities of Sopron, Eger, Tokaj, Budapest and Lake Balaton.

November - February

The coldest months of the year, the temperature ranges from -3°C to 10°C, and strong winds intensify the feeling of cold. Days are short, and the sun shines about 3-5 hours a day. Rainfall and snowfall may occur. In the higher parts of the mountains, snowfall is frequent, but not intense. Winter sports are possible on the slopes near the border with Slovakia.

The winter months are generally outside the tourist season and are not the best time to visit the country (except in Budapest and larger cities), as a large part of provincial museums, open-air museums and castles are closed. Tourists may also have limited access to hotel facilities and some restaurants.

Winter attractions can include thermal pools and open-air hot springs, which are more enjoyable to visit on cooler than hot summer days. Lake Balaton often freezes over in winter, with just a few degrees of frost covering it with an ice cap. On the lake you can not only walk, but also skate or race on buoys.
