Besakih Temple, Mount Agung
Facts and practical information
Perched on the slopes of Mount Agung in Bali, Indonesia, Besakih Temple is not only a significant religious site but also a masterpiece of architectural grandeur. Known as Pura Besakih, it is the largest and holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali and is often referred to as the 'Mother Temple'. This sprawling complex consists of at least 23 separate temples, with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung.
The temple complex sits approximately 1,000 meters high on the volcanic mountain, offering breathtaking views and an otherworldly atmosphere. The history of Besakih Temple dates back to the 14th century, though the site itself is thought to have been used as a sacred place since prehistoric times. Its grandeur and significance have made it a central place of worship and pilgrimage for Balinese Hindus.
Visitors to Besakih Temple are greeted by a majestic flight of stairs leading to the Candi Bentar (split gateway), which opens into the main area of the temple. The complex is a collection of majestic, multi-tiered meru towers, and shrines, each dedicated to a different god or goddess and each offering a unique spiritual experience.
The temple's architecture reflects the Hindu belief in the cosmos, with the mountain symbolizing the sacred Mount Meru and the temple complex representing the universe. The layout is designed to lead the spiritual individual upward and closer to the divine.
For tourists, Besakih Temple is a cultural treasure trove. It is recommended to visit with a guide to fully appreciate the site's history, symbolism, and rituals. Visitors should also be respectful of the religious customs and dress modestly when entering the temple grounds. Sarongs and sashes can usually be rented at the entrance.
The temple is open year-round, but visiting during one of the many Hindu festivals can be particularly rewarding. The most significant event is the annual Besakih Festival, a month-long celebration filled with religious ceremonies, cultural performances, and processions.
