When Is the Best Time To Visit Iran?

The answer to the question of what is the best month to visit Iran depends on what you are interested in doing during your stay. Here you can see an overview of each month and its typical weather conditions.

Tourist Season in Iran

Iran is best seen from March to May and September to October, then we can count on good weather in most areas, while avoiding extremely high summer temperatures. Warm and sunny days guarantee comfortable conditions for sightseeing.

From June to August you can also visit Iran, but you have to reckon with very high temperatures prevailing practically throughout the country, especially in the south (including the Persian Gulf) and in semi-desert and desert areas, such as the area around the city of Yazd. It is then best to choose the slightly cooler north, the Caspian Sea coast, or organize trekking in the Iranian mountains.

The months from November to February, due to the deterioration of the weather, are not the best time for sightseeing. In the mountains and in the northern and western regions it gets really cold, the bar of the mercury can drop well below 0°C. Frequent and heavy rains are common on the Caspian coast. However, you can go to the south, where temperatures are more bearable. Winter sports enthusiasts, however, will benefit from the cold weather; the ski resorts in the Elbrus range have been in peak ski season since December.

The spring months are a very good time to travel to Iran. Warm but not hot days guarantee ideal conditions for both sightseeing in cities and active outdoor activities.

During this time, you can ski at resorts located in the Elbrus range, such as Dizin, the largest ski resort in the Middle East. The ski season there lasts from December to April/May, and the modern tourist infrastructure attracts a multitude of ski enthusiasts.

At the same time, you can laze on the beach and swim in the warm waters on the southern coast on the Persian Gulf. Go to the beautiful beach in Bandar Abbas or sunbathe on the islands of Hormoz (red sand beach), Qesm and Kish, where temperatures fluctuate between 25°C and 32°C.

In March, you should also attend the Nowruz festival, when the new year and the coming spring are celebrated. It is one of the biggest events in the Iranian calendar.

The summer months bring rising temperatures throughout the country. Southern regions (Persian Gulf) and semi-desert and desert areas (including the Yazd area) become very hot. The bars of the mercury reaching 40°C - 50°C and the heat pouring from the sky make the weather unbearable even for those accustomed to high temperatures.

Therefore, travel to places such as Ahwaz, Bushehr, Bandar-e Abbas, Kerman, Bam, Chahbahar and Zahedan is advised against. Other places (Tehran, Isfahan, Yazd, Shiraz) are a bit cooler, but even so, the temperatures are generally around 30°C - 40°C.

In summer, the most pleasant places can be found in the north of the country and on the Caspian Sea coast, where warm and sunny days are not lacking, and temperatures are much lower than in other regions. Sea bathing and sunbathing, although not the most popular in Iran, are possible, but it is necessary to remember the restrictions in this area (among other things, a skimpy bikini is not advisable).

Mountain trekking enthusiasts will also find ideal conditions for expeditions during this time. Damavand, the country's highest peak, is accessible to any hiker reasonably familiar with the mountains.

September - October

The autumn months just like the spring months (April and May) are the best time to travel to Iran. The most comfortable temperatures prevail then - especially for sightseeing. You can easily arrange round trips, starting from the very north and ending in the south of the country.

Northern areas (including Tabriz and the Caspian Sea coast) tend to be a few degrees cooler and cloudier, but the further south you go, the warmer it gets and temperatures rise to 25°C - 32°C. Cheerful and sunny days encourage active recreation, and nature in its autumn colors makes hiking and walking more enjoyable.

At the end of October, the first frosts and snowfalls may appear in slightly higher areas, so it is worth stocking up on warmer clothing.

The winter months bring significant cooling throughout Iran, with temperatures likely to drop well below 0°C.

The coldest regions are the north and west of the country and mountainous areas. The Caspian Sea coast experiences frequent cloud cover and heavy rains. In contrast, cold and snowy winters are common in the Elbrus mountain range. In the largest ski resorts (including Dizin and Shemshak), good conditions last from December to mid-May. Perfectly groomed slopes and modern lifts are a paradise for skiers and snowboarders. It is worth remembering that due to snowfall there may be traffic problems, some roads are covered, so access to parts of the regions is limited.

Winter is undoubtedly a good time to visit the south of the country. In places like Kerman and Yazd, nights and mornings are relatively cool (sometimes even very), while daytime temperatures can exceed 20°C. Pleasant temperatures of 25°C also prevail around Shiraz and the islands of Kish and Qesm.
