Green Zone, Baghdad

The Green Zone, officially known as the International Zone of Baghdad, is an area of high importance and security in the heart of Iraq's capital city, Baghdad. This fortified enclave has been a focal point for international presence and governmental institutions since its establishment following the 2003 invasion of Iraq by the United States-led coalition forces.

Spanning approximately 10 square kilometers, the Green Zone is situated on the banks of the Tigris River. It has been home to some of the most significant political and diplomatic facilities in Iraq, including the U.S. Embassy, which is one of the largest American diplomatic missions in the world, the Iraqi parliament, and the office of the Prime Minister.

Initially, the Green Zone was heavily fortified with checkpoints, blast walls, and strict access controls, effectively separating it from the rest of Baghdad. It was intended to provide a secure environment for the Iraqi interim government and foreign embassies amidst the turmoil and violence that followed the toppling of Saddam Hussein's regime.

Over the years, the Green Zone has been a symbol of the occupation and the political struggles of post-war Iraq. It has been targeted by insurgents and has witnessed numerous attacks. However, the area has also been a site of critical political dialogue, reconciliation efforts, and international engagement aimed at rebuilding and stabilizing the country.

In recent times, there have been efforts to normalize the Green Zone and reduce the sense of division it represents. Some roads have been reopened, and the security measures have been relaxed to better integrate the zone with the rest of Baghdad. Nevertheless, it remains a heavily secured area due to its political and strategic significance.
