Montefiore Windmill, Jerusalem
Facts and practical information
The Montefiore Windmill stands as a striking landmark in the historical landscape of Jerusalem, Israel. This windmill, constructed of Jerusalem stone, was completed in 1857 to provide a reliable source of bread flour for the residents of the city. It is not just an iconic structure but a symbol of Jerusalem's diverse cultural and technological history.
Commissioned by the British Jewish philanthropist Moses Montefiore, the windmill was part of a broader effort to help the Jewish community in Jerusalem become more self-sufficient. It was initially built outside the Old City walls, in what was then a pioneering neighborhood known as Mishkenot Sha'ananim, which Montefiore also helped establish.
Designed by a British engineer, the windmill originally featured four sails and was modeled after the 19th-century European-style windmills. It served the community until the early 20th century, when newer technologies made it obsolete. Despite ceasing operations, the windmill remained a prominent feature of Jerusalem's skyline.
The Montefiore Windmill underwent several restorations, the most recent in 2012, when it was returned to working order. Today, it stands not only as a monument to Montefiore's contributions but also as a testimony to the city's evolution and the blending of old and new.
While it no longer grinds flour, the site now serves as a museum and cultural center. Visitors can explore the small museum inside, which details the history of the mill and the life of Moses Montefiore. The windmill's balcony offers panoramic views of the modern city of Jerusalem, juxtaposing the past with the present.
