Mosquée de Kong
Facts and practical information
The Kong Mosque or Great Mosque of Kong is an Islamic religious building located in the city of Kong in northern Côte d'Ivoire. In 1741 it was noted that the city of Kong already had several mosques including the Great Mosque destroyed by Samory Touré around 1897 and rebuilt at the dawn of the twentieth century.
The mosque of Kong, of neo-Sudanese style constitutes the oldest symbol of the Islamization of the people of the North of the Ivory Coast. It has retained its function as a place of prayer and gathering. Its architecture, which has remained intact for a long time due to regular maintenance, has however undergone, in 1978, an unsuitable restoration that has somewhat destructured the building.
The building is made of mud brick techniques consolidated with strands offering a compact architectural uniqueness adapted to the relatively rainy climate of the region.
A decree of April 20, 1988 classifies the mosque as a historical monument.
