Emperor MeijiUnder Emperor Meiji, Japan becomes wealthy and powerful. The country wins wars against China and Russia.

Korea under Japanese ruleJapan takes over the Korean peninsula and rules it for 35 years, until 1945.
1923
The Great Kanto EarthquakeThe Great Kanto Earthquake, one of the worst quakes in world history, destroys Tokyo and Yokohama. More than 140,000 people are killed.

Shōwa EmperorHirohito became emperor of Japan on December 25, 1926, following the death of his father.
