Facts About Ikayaki
Ikayaki is a beloved Japanese street food, renowned for its simplicity and delectable flavor. Typically, it consists of grilled squid brushed with soy sauce. It can be served in various forms, such as whole squid, rings cut from the body, or just the tentacles. This savory treat is a staple at izakayas (Japanese pubs) and is a popular choice at Japanese festivals.
Interestingly, in Osaka, "ikayaki" has a unique twist. Here, it often refers to a "squid pancake" which diverges significantly from the grilled version. This Osaka specialty is prepared by folding chopped squid into a batter, adding Worcestershire sauce, and sometimes an egg, before cooking it between two iron plates. The result is a delicious, quickly-made snack that takes just a minute to cook. One of the best places to try this variation is at the Snack Park in the Hanshin Department Store in Umeda, Osaka.
Whether you're strolling along the streets or relaxing at the beach, you're likely to come across ikayaki vendors. However, don't confuse it with takoyaki, ball-shaped octopus dumplings also from Osaka. Both are delightful, but they are distinctly different!
