Kitaoka Shrine is located in Kasuga 1-chome, Nishi-ku, Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture. The shrine is said to have been built in the Heian period by inviting a spirit from the Gion Shrine in Kyoto. The shrine was formerly a prefectural shrine.
The shrine was formerly called Gion Shrine or Gion-Gu Shrine, but in 1868 the name was changed to Kitaoka-Gu Shrine due to the prohibition of mixing Shintoism and Buddhism, and in 1872 the name was changed to the current name. The name of the former shrine remains on Gion Bridge, which spans the Tsuboigawa River about 200 meters to the east, and at the Gion Bridge stop of the Kumamoto City Tram Line.
