Itsukushima Shrine, Miyajima

Nestled in the serene city of Miyajima, the Itsukushima Shrine stands as an iconic Shinto sanctuary in Hatsukaichi, Japan. Known for its unique construction and cultural significance, the shrine is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been attracting pilgrims and tourists alike for centuries.

The shrine's most distinguishing feature is its "floating" torii gate, which at high tide seems to stand majestically upon the waters of the Seto Inland Sea. This vermilion gate, contrasting with the blue of the sea and the green of Mount Misen in the background, creates a picturesque scene that has become synonymous with the beauty of traditional Japan.

The Itsukushima Shrine was originally built in the 6th century and has been maintained and renovated over the years. Its current form dates back to the 12th century when Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful clan leader, selected the site for its natural beauty. The complex includes several buildings connected by boardwalks, which are also designed to deal with the rise and fall of the tides.

Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall, prayer hall, and noh theater stage, all of which are built over the water, giving the illusion of floating. The shrine is dedicated to the three daughters of Susano-o no Mikoto, Shinto deity of seas and storms, which is fitting given its unique relationship with the sea.

In addition to the remarkable architecture and scenic views, the Itsukushima Shrine is also famous for its religious festivals. The most notable of these is the annual Itsukushima Shrine Grand Festival, which includes a procession of boats carrying gods across the sea, traditional music, and dance performances.
