Located in the center of Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, the Sasebo City Museum Shimanose Art Center is an art museum operated by the city of Sasebo with the aim of becoming an "open art museum" where citizens can relax. Adjacent to Shimanose Park, the building with reliefs of 12 Greek mythological gods cast into the exterior walls is one of the symbolic towers of the city.
In addition to exhibiting artworks from the museum's collection, approximately 140 external exhibitions are held each year, including special exhibitions, special exhibitions, prefectural exhibitions, and Sasebo citizens' exhibitions. On the fifth floor, there is an archaeological exhibition room that displays materials excavated through surveys conducted by Sasebo City since 1964, including pottery with bean-grain patterns discovered in the Senpukuji Cave.
