Royal Palace, Luang Prabang
Facts and practical information
The Royal Palace, also known as Haw Kham, is the centerpiece of Luang Prabang, a city that was the capital of the Kingdom of Laos. The palace, now converted into a museum, stands as a testament to the rich history and culture of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed town.
Built in 1904 during the French colonial era for King Sisavang Vong and his family, the structure is an elegant blend of traditional Lao and French Beaux-Arts architecture. The palace was the royal residence until the communist takeover in 1975. After which, it was transformed into a museum that was opened to the public in 1995.
The museum is home to a collection of personal royal artifacts, giving visitors an intimate glimpse into the lives of Laos' former monarchs. It features the throne room with its mirrored walls, the king's reception room, and bedrooms, as well as a collection of gifts from various countries. Of particular interest is the Pha Bang, a highly revered Buddha statue, which gives the city its name.
The Royal Palace Museum also houses historical items such as traditional musical instruments, religious artifacts, and items relating to the monarchy. The exhibits are well-preserved and presented with descriptions in English and Lao, providing valuable insights into the country's past.
The palace is surrounded by well-maintained gardens, adding to the serene atmosphere of the compound. Visitors can also enjoy the view of Mount Phousi from the palace grounds.
The museum is open to the public every day except Tuesdays, with a modest entrance fee. Photography inside the museum is not allowed, preserving the dignity of the space. Visitors are also expected to dress respectfully, covering shoulders and knees, as a sign of respect for Lao culture and the royal history of the site.
