Facts and practical information
Church of St. Aleksander Nevsky - parish Orthodox church in Oniksztach.
It was built in 1873 on the place of the previous, temporary wooden temple under the same call. On September 17 this year, her solemn dedication took place. She was open until 1915, when the parish priest in Oniksztach went to running. As a result, services were not held in the church until 1924, when the Eleuterius, ordained by the Archbishop of Vilnius and Lithuanian, came to the city. Ilja Gabiec. Due to the fact that the building was closed for 9 years, in 1922 local authorities considered the confiscation of the church devastated during World War I and adaptation to school. These plans were finally not implemented.
The temple remained open throughout the entire interwar period. Also after World War II, in 1947, the Stalinist authorities registered it as an active Orthodox temple. In the 1950s, a partial renovation took place, which was carried out by the priest, Fr. Aleksandr Despite this, in the late 1950s, the building was in very poor technical condition. General its renovation, combined with the suspension on the belfry of new bells, was carried out by Fr. Vasily Kalashnik, pastor from 1959. The building was renovated again in the 1990s.
