Climate of Lithuania
Lithuania lies in the zone of transitional temperate climate characterized with maritime influences on the Baltic Sea coast and continental features inland.
Summers are warm and sunny with temperatures around 20°C - 25°C, and there are also hot days with temperatures of 30°C. The weather can often be capricious. On sunny days, there can be cloudiness and fleeting rainfall.
Winters in Lithuania are cold with fairly heavy snowfall. Days are short, windy and overcast. The pillars of the mercury range between -8°C and -1°C, with the coast generally a few degrees warmer than the rest of the country. Persistent frosts cause some rivers, as well as parts of the Baltic Sea, to freeze over.
Precipitation is year-round and amounts to 800 mm on the coast and in the Samogitian Highlands and 550 mm - 600 mm inland. Rainfall is intensified in summer and autumn, while snow usually occurs from December to March. Violent thunderstorms occurring in coastal areas and rare in other parts of the country are also a characteristic phenomenon.
